IR Collective Mix Tape (Day 14)

You thought it was over! But it’s not. We got home and finally got around to covering this song, which we had intended to cover from the beginning. We’re off to Boston in an hour or so, so no long intros:

Falling Slowly (original by Swell Season) - The Timid Owls

Everyone have a good new year! Wrap up post keeps getting pushed back, yes. Let’s see, maybe Wednesday? I’ll say hi to GW for you.

no fair getting me all teary-eyed at work… i already have a bad reputation for crying after the “straight outta compton” debacle… but I digress. You guys sound so beautiful together. I love this song– i love how you guys sang it– there’s just love. and that is apparently, all you need.

this has been the best part of my holidays.

    dear Jenna,

you are the best. i’m glad you like this, as you are the once expert. tim says i should listen to the softies a bunch and then go to baltimore so we can record our album. hope that works for you.

    straight outta brooklyn,
    ali

    (1) Those frilly guitars, the horn, the vocals. Awesome.
    (2) And seriously, Tim, you haven’t sung in this range in a while (at least, not before all of these covers), and I LIKE IT.
    (3) Yeah. A new Softies. I also like this idea a lot.

no fair - marty and I wanted to do this one but we thought it was too late! Anyway, just beautiful. You two sound great together and Tim, you’ve never sounded better. Also, the ‘mock’ horn is a VERY nice touch.

Random Note: I still play with friends in the San Francisco area - a band we started in high school (the ‘father’ of My Little Brother?). The keyboardist’s daughter, Jena McRae, got to sing this with Glen Hansard at a recent Frames show in LA. Check out the You-Tube video:

  6. bmpmlb Says:

    I think that’s a real horn.

  7. tim Says:

it is a real horn! and that video is great. i think it would be weird if i asked to sing that song with mr. hansard.

  8. bmpmlb Says:

I like how when she starts singing, he smiles in utter relief that she can sing.

  9. b-dogg's dad Says:

Utter relief, yes. so there’s more to this story. turns out, Jena saw him in Seattle a few weeks before and he randomly pulled someone up who, impromptu, volunteered when he asked - Jena was so jealous. but apparently the volunteer was not up to snuff so kind of ruined the encore. so, when she’s going to the LA show a few weeks later, Jena decides to pre-empt things and, seeing him on the street before the show goes up to him and says she can do a much better job than the woman volunteer he had in Seattle. That explains his little story before he calls her up.
