Like Louis Prima: Just a gigolo

Sunday, October 31st, 2004

the seattle times has a pretty shoddy article about kennewick, bush country, but that fact that it’s poorly written doesn’t make me any less sympathetic to the people portrayed in it. i lived in the tri-cities! with people that said stuff like this!

Character is what they like about George Bush. “He’s honest and forthright,” she said. “My word for Kerry is that he’s a gigolo. He’s got this suave demeanor like he can look you in the eye and lie.”

kerry is a gigolo! kerry is a fucking gigolo! what the hell is that supposed to mean?! honesty and forthrightedness, man, this article is just making people look damned ignorant.

At the Ennis home, traditional values mean that Rick Ennis, a millwright at the Hanford nuclear reservation, is head of the household. And this household is voting for George Bush…

The Ennises are Christians, regularly attending the Cathedral of Joy, a nondenominational church in nearby Richland. Rick Ennis likes Bush’s stands on abortion and gay marriage. He believes in hard work, having no time for people begging on street corners.

no time to beg on street corners, but plenty of time to hate gays and tell women what they should and shouldn’t be doing. oh, the joys of “traditional” households.

Brower pays attention to the headlines. He thinks Iraq should have been invaded sooner. He doesn’t trust Kerry because “Kerry is going to trust the French, the Germans, everybody who doesn’t like us.”…

“Kids today, they don’t work for anything. They have $80 shoes, driving new cars, a cellphone, pager, computers,” said Brower. “What’s a kid doing with that kind of stuff?”

if you had a cellphone, why would you need a pager, especially when your $80 shoes are walking you to your brand new car with a computer in it that just does “bad” stuff all day long. you don’t need that stuff, why do you have it?! here, play with this stick so you can grow up to believe that everything new is anathema to our society, including foreign countries! i don’t care if we invaded iraq already, invade iraq again! put those kids and their fancy gadgets in tikrit so they can do something useful for a change, like killing foreigners!

how bloody infuriating.

Sway the vote!

Friday, October 29th, 2004

i’ve been researching stuff while filling out my absentee ballot for washington state. i’m working on a cheat sheet for washington voters that don’t have the time to read about the issues; i’ll finish this weekend and have it ready for your perusal monday morning so that on tuesday you can head out an informed voter on state issues.

really, i’m just using my huge internet presence to sway the vote so that washington is the way i want it to be. isn’t that what the internet is for?

i’ve finished a cover letter, and need someone to look at it and make sure it’s not too stupid. if you wanna look, drop a comment, please.

Anti-climax

Thursday, October 28th, 2004

goddamnit. i’ve had 10 or so comments today that were all comment-spam. it seems like they’re getting smarter about getting past mt-blacklist, using html-mark up in the comments so that mt-blacklist doesn’t see that this is comment-spam. i might have to take out html in the comments to thwart this.

so the red sox won. it seems a little anti-climactic now that baseball is over for the season and the “curse” is gone. jesus, if i see one more headline with a pun on derek lowe’s name or references to the “curse” i’m gonna poke my friggin’ eye balls out. manny got the mvp, which was far and away an atrocity when curt schilling was pushing balls past those suckas at the plate. but that’s offense-centric ball for you. he certainly didn’t earn the mvp for his defense.

i’ve been slaving away at the computer trying to get a cover letter done, which is, as everyone knows, awfully tiring and tedious and can bring you to the depths of despair every time you look at that blank page. i’ve barely got two sentences done, and then i probably won’t even stick with those when it comes down to re-writing the final draft. boo cover letters!

anyone think of anything good to be for halloween? speaking of, i’m playing a show in kent on saturday. email me for directions.

Switch

Monday, October 25th, 2004

errol morris, the exceptional documentarian responsible for the thin blue line and the fog of war, has created political switch ads, a set of ads of several people that voted republican in 2000 but are voting for john kerry this year.

there’s a ton of them; downloadable ads, posters, and movies, all on errol morris’ site.

i’ve spent the majority of the day trying to get myself to finish up my resume, but monkey lured me into taking a nap. two hours later, nothing is done. i hate having to start getting back into Real World Stuff.

Red Sox

Thursday, October 21st, 2004

i distinctly remember, though i guess i can’t prove it unless someone speaks up, saying to someone that if there were any team in the history of baseball that would be able to pull off a 3-0 comeback, it would be this year’s red sox. schilling, ortiz, and damon will go down in the history books as the players that broke the curse. i don’t even believe in the curse, but some people think that garciaparra being traded was the link. manny was pretty much useless, and if i hadn’t seen him fuck up fielding before, i’d say it seemed like he flubbed some balls on purpose out there because he didn’t want to upset his hometown. putting pedro in there in the 7th (with a 5-run lead?!) seemed to be more an exorcising of demons than out of necessity. any other game and you’ll see timlin in earlier, but i guess this was anything BUT any other game. i’m hoping that the team is not too tired for the WS.

i was at the college inn last night, by my lonesome and 35 other raving lunatic un-yankee fans (the red sox fans were few and far between) cheering like we were at the game itself. people were annoying, getting nervous (it’s a fucking blowout!) and booing calls like the game hinged on them (this wasn’t game 6). there was some dude yelling The Dumbest Things Ever all night long, but i was stuck in the hallway listening to it so at least it wasn’t in my ear. i’m pretty happy that the sox won. i’m also pretty happy to be back in seattle.

jason tipped me off on jon stewart’s appearance on crossfire, where he called that asshole with the bowtie a dick. if the show actually had real debate (notice how bowtie dude never actually gives a valid argument or even simple defense on his show) jon stewart would be crowned, hands-down, the winner. i film has the whole thing, it’s called jon stewart’s brutal exchange with cnn host.

Cinnamon

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

i didn’t pay as much attention to the debates last night as much as i paid attention to the yankees/red sox game. i caught glimpses of the debates and thought it was pretty damn boring, same sound bites, same arguments, same smirks, same nods, same accusations, same everything. the sox lost again, which sucks. i want the bride to come as much as cossette.

i know i’ve probably said this before, but the cosby show could quite possibly the best sit-com ever. i’m noticing, that here in rohnert park rather than anywhere else i’ve watched daytime television, there’s an inordinate number of personal injury lawyer commercials and tech school commercials. this makes me think of vern fonk, who obviously has the personal injury market cornered in seattle.

i washed my car, dropped of some used motor oil, got some groceries and came back home before 1 today. when i got out of the car, “cinnamon” by the long winters was playing in my car. when i got inside, “cinnamon” continued to play on kexp on my computer. crazy.

The day after tomorrow

Tuesday, October 12th, 2004

i just finished writing a letter to the fcc regarding the documentary “stolen honor” that’s going to be shown across the country on sinclair stations. the documentary is being shown on PUBLIC airwaves, free of charge. who owns sinclair? actually the question is who does sinclair own? sinclair owns the largest amount of local stations in the US and have pushed for media consolidation, a big agenda of the bush administration, in order to own more and more television stations. can you say “conflict of interest?” anyways, i’m about to watch “the day after tomorrow” so go on over to freepress.net/sinclair and learn more about yourself, and send a letter to the fcc, call your sinclair affiliate, do something.

DO SOMETHING. me? i’m gonna watch global warming destroy the earth.
