here’s the full text of al gore’s speech last night. i’m only about half-way through, but it’s a good speech. the way gore and moveon.org are putting consistent pressure on the administration is remarkable.

i’m reading bob woodward’s plan of attack right now, and a lot of what he talks about with iraq is mirrored in the speech. rumsfeld’s derelict disrespect of military opinion (and the military itself) is most notable, and what is readily apparent now is that he doesn’t intend to take any responsibility for abu graib, regardless of his obvious involvement in determining policy leading to the crimes there.

doesn’t that just sound awful? it’s just like mcnamara was saying in fog of war, if rumsfeld wasn’t on the winning team, he’d be charged for war crimes.

boston globe on semiotics grads, including one ira glass:

Semiotics . . . was like a conspiracy theory to beat all conspiracy theories,” Ira Glass remembers. “It wasn’t just that authority figures of various sorts did things that were questionable . . .. It’s that language itself was actually a system designed to keep you in your place, which when, you know, you’re 19 or 20 is pretty much exactly what you’re ready to hear.”
