lend me some sugar, i am your neighbor

we drove 9000 miles in a month once, and just in the past month, i’ve done another 6000 or so, i think, which is spectacular, and though we didn’t follow these rules specifically, i think the morning news road trip howto is pretty good. though much of the music stuff is pretty moot when you only have a radio working.

-i found the perfect job for james, now if only he could get his ass back in the states and apply for it: lego is hiring “master builders”.

-here’s a bunch of apple scripts to nerd up and modify your itunes player. i looked around for something interesting but failed to find anything, but that may be just because i’m lazy. if you’re not, take a look. if you are, revel in our kindred apathy and consider this post filler.

-tipped by a friend in the band, porterville is really good. smart, catchy pop songs with stellar production. and look at me, being so ignorant as to refuse to recognize any los angeles music scene. psh, i knew it was there, seriously. when first moving to l.a., the only person that said anything good about it was josh from lightheavyweight, who said, “it’s a good place, you just have to find your niche.” i suppose the same could be said about anyplace though.

-i read out of left field on the train ride home from seattle the first time. i finished it in a day because i had so much time on my hands and it probably would have taken me a lot long if i hadn’t because there was so much about the mariners management and ownership in there that about bored me to death. regardless, the parts about the ‘95 season were great and being such a late-comer to the mariners fandom, it was good history. and i now have a new hatred for mariners ownership, namely howard lincoln. boo that guy.

-i also plowed through one of derrida’s lectures of which i can’t remember the name right now. brilliant. derrida’s deconstructing of strauss and de saussure is dense and complicated, playful and interesting. i had a hard time getting through it but it’s fun stuff if you’re a big philosophy nerd with too much time on your hands.

foodies pay attention, dining guide for you. i started reading it thinking that this stuff would be good to know, then i realized that i don’t really want to know any of that stuff, because there’s no way in hell i’m paying 85 bucks for a bottle of wine in the next year.

-greg pointed out this hilarious interview with bill o’reilly on fresh air. that dude is so fucking crazy. i was talking to james once about him, back when we would just argue about stuff regardless of what we were talking about, and he was defending o’reilly and it was impossible for him to continue. i punched him in the nose and made him eat canned tuna for a week.

-this is mildly amusing, but only once: drinkometer.

-here’s a preview of the oscars, but wait, here’s the kicker: all the predictions are done without seeing the movies! i think that’s a pretty good way to do things, because it can probably be pretty accurate and easier to remain objective.

-we’re entering our script into this fade in contest, which is due halloween. cross your fingers.

-brandon and i were going to write a song called “whatever happened to benji cossa”, but then i googled him and found out he’s on the soundtrack for this movie called zero day. the song he did is volcano and it is great. i love that guy’s voice, man.

-i just watched the best of los angeles on the food network and saw the inside of the place in westwood where all the rich people hang and eat. it’s all white in there and they make the waiters dress like glasses of milk. oh yeah, it’s called euro chow. how’s that for a stupid name?

-have a good weekend, suckas.

go cu–! oh. go bost–! ah, shit. go marlins? i admit, it was heartbreaking but that’s the way it was expected to go. looks like steinbrenner’s move for boone wasn’t just a block for the mariners. it was a clutch hit, but fuck man, i wish the underdog would win every now and then.

strike that, the ultimate underdog here is the florida marlins, overshadowed by all the cubs/red sox mythology. i’ve been wrong about the nlcs, alcs, pedro vs. rocket, and saying the marlins are going to take it all is just another bad prediction waiting to happen. so, um, go yankees?

there’s an
interview with genndy tartakovsky at toonzone
regarding clone wars and his work with lucasfilm. lucas is so fucking stingy with his work, he originally wanted one minute movies from tartakovsky. it’s more like three minutes now, which is still damn short, but better than 60 seconds.

-the aquatic life with steve zissou is supposed to wrap up filming in january. i didn’t actually read it since i hear there’s spoilers, but a script review was posted over at wesanderson.org, check it out, if you want.

-not being at work for the past month has been nice, but all the traveling causes me to miss some of my favorite npr shows, including the treatment. thankfully, all the stuff is archived, here’s the interview with sofia coppola, who talks about the tokyo train pop soundtrack of lost in translation. the interview gets kind of boring, but it’s always nice to hear elvis be more insightful about people’s films than they are themselves. and he knows his shit.

-i don’t usually link stories on pitchfork since anyone that reads this probably stops by there, too, and actually, i mentioned this a long time ago, but the dear you re-release is official and should be coming soon, though there’s no release date yet. anyway, i got the original out of print disc when it came out, so eat that johnny-come-latelys. no, but seriously, five extra tracks some on etc., and a re-hash of “boxcar” that sounds like they added twenty guitars and some organ on the track.

-here’s pictures of the z600 i want. it’s getting harder and harder though to wait until that comes out. the z200 is pretty dope, too.

-i’m back from the nw, with josh and less one mariners hat (i think i left it at jason’s). we took 101 back and it was a nice drive from san jose, much better than taking i-5. i go back to work monday, so expect more regular posts starting next week. i just took out that old etc. album to check what tracks were going to be duplicated on the reissue, and those extra tracks are hot. there’s a psychedlic furs cover, too. i hear that morton salt girl t-shirt has been nixed by morton’s cease and desist. my old one is getting kinda wasted, so brandon hooked me up with a brand-new one.

getting over my cold i got from playing baseball in the rain in bellingham, watched willard at jason’s the night before we headed to eugene. i can’t believe the fuckin’ cubs lost. game 7 pedro vs. rocket tonight, history in the making. glued to the tv.

thinking about leaving, how i should say goodbye

the psx comes out in the US late 2004 and looks sick with tons of additions including a 160 (!) gig hard drive and personal video recorder capabilities.

also, there’s a ton of videos, screenshots, and an in-depth look at trick making for tony hawk’s underground over at ign.

-i’m going back to the northwest today for a week. if it doesn’t seem real now, wait until you get back.

back in the day, scott introspekt posted this song at the end of summer and after he decided to take his website down. i haven’t talked to him since then, but that was a hell of a cap to put on the season.

i want to prevaricate my way out to you

Tuesday, October 7th, 2003

did i tell you that the night before we left last week we tried to get into the weakerthans show by buying tickets at the door? yeah, sold out, they sold the last four tickets to some FUCK in front of us. i walked up to him before the tickets were out to ask if it was the ticket-holders line we were standing in, he gave me a dirty look and said no. some dude popped out of the front of the line and asked if anyone wanted to buy tickets, he rushed down there and got the last four. i punched him in the nose and pantsed him and pushed him into oncoming traffic on santa monica boulevard. seriously though, dude was a total ass.

-skrocki records is in business! the first release is the full-length from slo mo rabbit kick and they’re playing the crocodile in seattle tonight. check it out and get the record for dirt cheap. i hear robbie’s releasing the album on 180 gram vinyl, too.

-now i’m not a registered california voter (sh.) and i just got a new washington state license, but i know people that are, and they better be voting no on the recall. regardless of what i think about schwarz, i’m more worried about some sort of watershed of events where republicans try to control the world. i realize this may be a slippery slope, but it’s worrisome nonetheless.

-go cubbies!

too bad your ass got sacked

i know this is old news, but i’m sure someone out there hasn’t seen these g.i. joe psas, some of them from ebaumsworld.com, some straight from
fensler films, some from nadablog.com, and one of them not located on any of them, the “purse” one, at dreamwill.net. so for those to lazy to google gi joe psas, i’ve done all the work. enjoy the absurdity.

-some school in illinois is getting sued for trying to set up a wi-fi network. it’ll be interesting to see what happens there, though i’m not saying a court will set a precedent for the actual health effects, but it’ll say something, right? we had a little discussion about this when i was up in seattle, it got a little heated, and there were a couple bloody noses as result.

-also while in seattle, i had a shitty time finding phones. we can’t get vonage at home because we use dsl (rather, it doesn’t make sense to get vonage, pay for a phone line AND a dsl line), so it makes more sense to cancel long distance, and get a cell phone. sadly, none of the phones i want are available in the states (BOO!), the nokia 8910i is sleek, but not here, and the ericsson z200 won’t be available until the 4th quarter. i wanted to get the t610, but read bad reviews (the 616 might be better), but there’s a deal for a new 610 for FREE if you get it with a t-mobile contract. t-mobile is a deal-breaker for me, not just because i hate catherine zeta-jones either. aw, whatever, i should just bite the bullet and drop the buck fifty for the 610.

-i’m going back on weds., and goddamn if the train isn’t boring, i’m thinking of dropping even MORE cash on a plane ticket to avoid that 36 hour snore that is the starlight coastal. some dude in front of me snored at night and during the day some kids cried and talked LOUD. i got lucky though, and had no one sitting next me on the train, but not lucky enough, because they played Holes and Bringing Down the House 4 times each on the ride. Holes was cool, but i had already seen it. Bringing Down the House? i poke my eyes out the second time around, i’m typing this all thgouh feel, so don’t bleame me if there are typos, write steve martin and the queen instead.

-man, there’s so little tv for me these days, i caught those hawks playing some poor D yesterday, but that 58 yard field goal? BOMB. and the chiefs’ dante hall making people look like fools all over the football field. bosox tonight, i’m rooting for them. CUBS - BOSOX world championship. that’s right, i said it. yankees shmankees.

-tomorrow i’m hitting owl’s classroom and will learn kids like they ain’t never learned before.

there’s some new stuff on tartakovsky’s clone wars, including some new images of characters, they got ‘em up over at toonzone. the cartoon premieres on november 7th.

-ice cube is taking vin diesel’s spot in XXX2. i gotta say though, ice t’s spot in 3000 miles to graceland is unbeatable. i mean, seriously, hanging upside down from a sliding hook coasting across a room twirling around in a storm of bullets and gunfire? hell yeah.

-man, i can’t believe futurama isn’t on tbs anymore. that was the shortest syndication in history. instead, they have re-runs of saved by the bell and that shitty cosby show where bill isn’t playing cliff, he’s playing some poor dude named hilton. i caught a glimpse of saved by the bell flipping channels (hell no i didn’t watch it) and saw tiffany thissen and a.c. slater dressed in tight bright bedazzled spandex. RETCH.

-every tuesday in november strokes begin their conan residency. heard some of the new album at sonic boom last week, hearing the rest now. doesn’t sound much different than their old stuff at all, and really, if it works, why change anything? next album might not be such a good idea though to use that same up down bass strum and kick snare feel. but what the hell do i know, anyway? nonetheless, definite head nods, if not fully danceable.

you go the potato chips? i’ll bring the hot sauce

Thursday, October 2nd, 2003

i’m back. in los angeles, long-ass train ride. here’s the new design, extra pages are up, though not complete. links are scarce. have a ton of work to catch up on. i got away with only buying 3 or 4 records. laptop screen got fucked somewhere between leaving seattle and getting on the train down the coast.

but the votes are in, that outkast album is ill, across the boards. i’m gonna get some work done, fix some stuff around here, and will get some of the 300+ pictures i took up here sometime soon.

it’s good to be home.
