whoa, what the fuck!? looks like fox is trying to make up for bad box office numbers, it’s getting creamed by pirates of the caribbean ($78.1M vs. $25.6M) and they use league of extraordinary gentlemen for the intro of the all-star game. that is some BULLshit! whatever, i guess some writers worked hard to make that intro exciting and all. maybe next year, guys! at least then, maybe fox will have something decent to synergize.

in any case, regardless of the fact that i have 8 all-stars on my fantasy baseball team, i’m still in 7th, but i’m shaking things up to get some diversity going for the second half.

so so grateful that slatch linked that new weakerthans track (plea from a cat named virtue), as far as i’m concerned, that is the most anticipated album of the year. bonus points for writing a song from the eyes of a cat.

and yeah, even more anticipated than the new death cab album, which, according to traveler’s diagram is already out on soulseek, and i expect your local newsgroup, too.

i spent all last night drafting a letter to my congresswoman about the de-funding of teach for america and encourage you to do the same if you’re into that. i don’t want to harp on about it, i’ve already done that, as many of you that i’ve already emailed know.

do you like it underground?

the combination of it being 80 mind-numbingly hot degrees in the office, the resulting sweat i broke trying to open what seems to be a steel bear-trap (package to a cliff bar), and the few hours i had this morning to sit alone and watch the teletubbies (work related, mind you) has caused me to declare this as the Most Uncomfortable Working Day Ever. i’d leave the building to grab some lunch, but then that would negate all the energy i expended on opening the cliff bar (picture me wrestling a silber alligator; if it had a nose, i’d be bashing it in with my bloodied fists).

i know for sure that seinfeld is coming to the comedy and magic club, but their stupid website isn’t working so i can’t check the dates, or the prices, or even check the hunch i had that jon stewart was going to be doing some stand up sometime soon. incidentally, i did find out stewart would be on the roast for denis leary on comedy central august 10th, which i only mention because the roast series for comedy central is produced by denis leary, so essentially, he’s roasting himself.

i finished jarhead this weekend, finally, which brings me only a book behind (or is it two?) on my one book a month deal (which, to many probably seems like nuthin’, but i, my friend, am a slow and lazy reader). the book had its moments, though not a particularly beautiful stretch of words nor is there a definite voice (in terms of style), but there are echoes of the horrors of war from older books vietnam books that i’ve ever read– it has the same feel, a razor sharp edge dividing War from The World. I expect you’d breeze through it in about a week, never think again that any war film was an anti- war film, and never pigeonhole a jarhead again. all in all, a good gulf war memoir, timed excellently.

we saw spellbound on friday up in santa monica. it didn’t disappoint; the kids involved all were amazing and the pacing and focus of the film remained taut throughout. i found myself not necessarily cheering for one particular contestant, regardless of my underdog leanings (which usually translate to socio-economic class), and the end didn’t even press the issue of winning. well done. check out the site (you can play hang man!)

i put in the sunshine fix yesterday, and after i wedged the cd out of its case, i found a picture of an uber-hippie psychedelic bill doss staring at me behind some glasses that, though probably were not shaped like flowers, might as well have been.

i think i paid too much money for a freakin’ promo disc, and to be sure, i listened to the first song and couldn’t even make it through i wanted to puke so fucking bad. man, all that pop magic and beach boy harmonies and interesting instrumentation really wasn’t just the brain-child of bill doss.

really though, the sunshine fix just legitimizes the olivia tremor control. maybe in a few years i’ll take a chance and put that cd back in the player. maybe. but for now, it’ll sit on the shelf collecting dust with all the other crappy-ass promos i’ve paid too much for.

the 800 page final report about sept 11 is coming out in two weeks, and if it tends to support allegations that the saudis support terrorism, it may give bush a boost on the whole missing WMD deal, but it’ll be interesting to see how much information will be released on the admin’s knowledge before the attacks, and if it will be enough to sink the ship or if it’ll all balance out the presidency in the public’s eye. i’ve given up on trying to predict public reaction. via broken lull.

i don’t like to believe that exactly what the riaa is fighting against is helping them, but the scotsman reports that illegal music downloads are boosting album sales, but will undoubtedly kill the singles market. if you can tell me the last time you bought a single (vinyl does not count), then i’ll send you a letter of a sympathetic nature mourning the death of CD singles.

i’ve forgotten what a joy cockeyed is. my favorite so far is the ketchup packet bear, mostly because i’m a big fan of bears and ketchup, which is also why i like the semi-related, how much is inside? ketchup edition.

i’m not particularly fond of the font they used on the cover art of the new dcfc album, nor really of the picture of the crow wrapped in yarn, but possibly because i have such an affinity for the something about airplanes packaging.

i didn’t know what gored meant and had to look it up. that doesn’t make getting gored in the spanish run sound any better than it is. turns out two americans were gored, and the last person to die in the run in 1995 was an american. is it just that we don’t run as fast?

nanotechnology is trying to grow organs, and has been relatively successful, although from what i understand, they’ve only been able to grow one layer of an organ, whereas a working one would require 50. either way, it’s some crazy shit, and i’ll be the first in line provided (knock on wood) i ever need an extra organ.

did you see that shit about nike buying out converse? i used to own a pair of jordans and a pair of bo jacksons back when he didn’t have to have his hip replaced. i can’t remember the last pair of nikes i owned, and i’ve never owned a pair of converse, damn you fat feet, damn you to hell! anyways, if i haven’t owned either in such a long time and don’t own stock in either company, why do i even care?! you’re right, i don’t. moving on.

i don’t even remember what this link is to, so let’s call it the mystery link since i have four minutes to finish writing this post, post it, send in my status report for work, and fill out my time sheet. so, here it is, the mystery link, i hope it’s not half as exciting as i’m making it out to be.

i dropped an unspeakable amount of cash this weekend, but added to my libarary the following: gang starr, the ownerz, which is hot so far; mos def, black on both sides, which is underwhelming and at times cringe-inducing when mos sings off-tune; gold chains, young miss america, on brian’s recommendation, a little sir mix-a-lot goes a long way on it, but the beats are enough; grandaddy’s sumday is very nice, i liked it better than sophtware slump on the first listen; sunshine fix, which i haven’t even listened to yet; ali picked up the new clem snide which we’d heard one song of thus far; i also picked up a copy of heidegger’s introduction to metaphysics and david foster wallace’s a supposedly fun thing i’ll never do again, in case you were wondering.

teen titans premiers in a couple of weeks, and the animation shots look hot, robin looks ill, none of that weak early batman animated series snuff. i hoping this won’t be as much of a disappointment (or downhill roll) justice league was. word is guest stars include wil wheaton and malcolm mcdowell, more here.

the work week’s just starting for me today, and already it’s too long. i heard last week that germany is suffering major economic problems because they have too many holidays and not enough people with their nose to the grindstone, which is why america is so goddamned great, isn’t it? less holidays, more money!

ack. in any case, ali and i caught finding nemo last night, which was a riot, though i still don’t like albert brooks much, but ellen degeneres was a fucking crack-up. nice to see a little jimmy james and beth showing up, still waiting on the newsradio dvd, no news here at work, and chances are we’ll see it first. i’ll keep my ears to the ground.

also saw legally blonde 2 (yeah, that’s right, i said it!) which had me nonplussed, seeing as i didn’t see the first one and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. regardless, it had its moments. and have heard a varying spectrum of things about t3, and my interest is waning rapidly.
