at the risk of this sidebar becoming the “all sex, all the time,” i thought this was an interesting article on punk porn, and also found out that members of minus the bear and onalaska own a (punk) porn site.

it sounded good, i felt ashamed, i knew every drum fill

driving from the makeshift skatepark in the middle of nowhere in kennewick, washington, josh, mike and i listened to the spinanes. with the windows down and the hot air snaking its way through the car, mike drove and blasted the spinanes and drummed on the steering wheel.

“i don’t play the drums, but whenever i hear this song, i play the drums with it,” he said, hitting the wheel hard.

when i was younger, my uncle sat me down in the kitchen, put two chopsticks in my hands, one in each. he turned a tin bowl over and sat it on my left, while he put another piece of cookware to my right. he made me cross my arms and hit everything in time. for some reason, i had a lot of trouble keeping the hi-hat bowl going whenever i hit the plate-snare. i eventually got it, and couldn’t stop.

“you’ll be playing the drums everywhere now, on the stairs, on the walls. you won’t be able to stop,” he told my mom. and he was right.

now this list is very incomplete, because A) i can’t find my lands farther east cd B) don’t call me twaddy is on cassette tape C) my cd player is on the fritz D) i didn’t include some of the obvious (damon che, that guy from pele, etc.) and E) i put some songs up last week (jawbreaker, fugazi) that included some favorites

enjoy the friday drummer tribute mini-playlist, a list by year:

things i learned (or was reminded of) from this post:

-it pays to write and think ahead of time. this thing took me for fucking ever.
-kazaa is a priceless tool when your cd-rom’s don’t work (don’t get me wrong, i own every single album up there).
-cyd ftp client is a shitty program. really shitty.
-i have a memory like a steel trap.
-trucker’s atlas is a long-ass song.
-i like things chronologically. whatever that means.
-i skipped a year. or two.

anything else? i hope not, because this is getting ridiculous. have a good weekend.

just when i think tv has fallen into the deepest of ruts and no reality tv show could pull it out, not even the one with the guy trying to out-eat the bear, my faith is redeemed by none other than the WB. yeah, the WB!

okay, not just the WB, but comedy central, too. last night i got home from work and caught not only chapelle show, but also the daily show. chappelle show was funny, i mean funny. the crackhead talking to the kids was good, and i like the snickers bar at the end of the theme song. i mean, i don’t like, like it, but it had good shock value comedy.

but this this morning, i caught conan and who was on? mc hammer. he was on promoting his show on the wb, the surreal life. ah, those heads at the WB have really got their work cut out for them this time– i mean, where else can you see mc hammer and manny-mo (otherwise known as emmanuel lewis) throwing down some moves at a fat burger in las vegas? absolute genius. it’s on tonight, so if you’re reading this on friday, it’s too late! but never fear, there’s always next week (i hear they have to find a date for that chick from baywatch, whoever gets the best candidate gets the master bedroom and a fist full of delicious peanut liquer!).

of course, i’m only half kidding.

so, what do you think, are you good in the sack?apparently, most americans don’t think so. those that visit that website with the poll, anyway.

i finally dragged this out after thinking about it so often lately, and it still feels good to me. there’s a certain initial energy in this record that doesn’t exist in the other ones– i read somewhere once that this album shows a band in its infancy, and the pink album was a band falling apart, and then it went on to praise how it feels to be something on, which went completely over my head.

but without fail, goldsmith delivers hard-punching and defined drums, mendel trounces along, and enigk’s voice flows over the entire thing. yeah, i know, i failed to mention anything about horner, but judging by the new fire theft stuff, they didn’t need him anyway.

ooh. that hurts.

ADDENDUM: no, but seriously. the second song i’ve heard from them started out pretty sedate, but eventually made me grit my teeth in excitement. here at the fire theft site is sinatra. see what i mean?

batman beyond & when harry met sally

i actually watched this a while ago, but never got around to saying anything about it– like how great it is. though the cut version is just a little different, this one is uncut and shows some blood, some crazy shit that the joker does, and give that little darker edge to it.

why fox didn’t renew this show and went with the stupid-ass zeta project is beyond me. batman beyond followed up on the dark knight animated serious and seemed to sit well with older audiences, though i don’t know how kids received it. there’s a great story arc in it, and this animated film follows that, explains a lot of questions, and is pretty much like reading comics– only cheaper and lazier.

and this, for some reason, i’ve seen at least 3 times since the beginning of the year. i hadn’t seen it before until we rented it a couple of weeks ago, and then usa decided to run it every other night for like a week. this morning i woke up with the song from oklahoma in my head, you know, the scene where they’re singing on the karaoke machine?

i’d have to say that it was a fine film, i’d take this over sleepless in seattle or any of that older sap that eprhon wrote. that, and rob reiner is responsible for directing, who’s always had a good track record with me. i liked the in-between scenes with the old couples and billy crystal’s smarminess before it got so old.

oh, the irony. looks like we’re going to war.

i did some homework this morning and tried to find some good rebuttals from the dems, couldn’t find much, and actually came across a few people who were pretty down on my homie gary locke. the general reaction to the sotu seems like the usual– well-received by most republicans, made fun of by the democrats.

i’d really like to see the daily show’s take on it tonight, because i bet it’s going to be fucking hilarious.

in any case, the reactions i’ve seen have been disheartening, but how can we really expect anything less? no one can cheerlead a nation by yelling, “we suck.”

i did, however, find some great erotic poetry based on the state of the union, and some fact-based information on the actual state of the union :

Poverty
1.3 million more Americans slipped below the official poverty line in 2001, the first increase since 1993. 11.7% of all Americans fell below the poverty line in 2001, up from 11.3% in 2000
[Source: U.S. Census Bureau].

Unemployment
November and December 2002 unemployment climbed to 6% - the highest since 1994. All told, 1.7 million jobs have been lost since January 2001. Currently, 8.6 million Americans are actively looking for work but unable to find it ๑ more than the combined total population of 10 states. Additionally, the number of unemployed out of work for over six months has gone from 633,000 at the end of 2000 to 1.9 million ๑ a 200% increase on path to produce the worst job creation record of any administration in the last 58 years. When Bush took office, nemployment had reached a 40-year low of 3.9%.

Stock Market
Between Dec 29, 2000 and the end of the third quarter of 2002, the total market value of all US equities has dropped by 38% or by $6.65 trillion [Source: Federal Reserve]. Because of this, many portfolios have been decimated, postponing the retirement plans of many Americans for years

we’ve done it, you know that, right? little did you know that when you started this whole “blogging” thing that you’d become so obsessed with it. but now, just look around, we’ve got a community going. though i only know about 5 of those people on the sidebar in real life, it’s more of a community than i had a year ago, when i took my long hiatus from the digital world.

when i first started, i didn’t know what the deal was or why anyone would want to read my page, and subsequently, no one really read the page. at some point, some people started coming more often, and i had a small community of people that i actually corresponded with, and one i even met in real life (scott introspekt, where are you?). it’s really weird, but not so weird anymore, is it?

it’s a free exchange of ideas, and i’m glad of it. leave knowing that the internet did something more than just provide us all with ample amounts of free porn.

so, i missed the state of the union because i’m working. something about hydrogen cars, though, i hear.

i enjoy waking up early in the morning when i don’t have anything in dire need of being accomplished. i wake up and lazily roll out of bed, this morning and yesterday i could smell the heat from outside through an open window. it’s kind of refreshing, really, knowing that it’s cold as hell in some parts of the country, and more likely than not, it’s raining back in seattle.

but we went for a walk, and it’s nice to see the sunset down here, and even when i get home, it’s so unlike los angeles, i can actually see stars.

and to top it all off, my copy of tape-op came in the mail today. what a great fuckin’ idea: writing off your cd purchases as professional development and getting taxes back. i know it’s a long shot, but if you got any more information on how to do this, i’m all ears.

this week is hopefully going to slow down a whole lot in terms of work (at work). did i tell you i got an 8-track? look at this thing.
i’m excited. are you?
