No links this week, maybe next week! Today, I am missing these dudes a lot.

These last two are from their last show. I warned you.

Movies February 2010

Monday, April 12th, 2010
  • 12 The Invention of Lying | 02.07.10
  • 13 Black Hawk Down | 02.14.10
  • 14 Knocked Up | 02.14.10
  • 15 Spider-man 3 | 02.24.10

I did not enjoy The Invention of Lying at all. It was terribly boring and not very funny at all. Top that all off with the fact that I find Jennifer Garner pretty annoying and Ricky Gervais only funny as David Brent. Yes, I’m inviting criticism. Please tell me how funny he is.

Black Hawk Down is still really good. I thought it was funny that there was only one or two dudes that are actually American playing American soldiers. Another interesting note: The film ends with a kick-ass Joe Strummer tune.

I know, not too many movies in February, but we really picked up the slack in March! More movies next week.

Death to flying things, indeed…

Weekly Links

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Oi, a little bit light on the links this week, mostly because I thought I was really wrapping things up on deliverables but it turned out I wasn’t at all. Another busy week putting out fires at work and not being able to get much else done. Glad it’s Friday.

I’m sad Stevens is saying goodbye to the Supreme Court, especially after reading the New Yorker article about him a while ago. In fact, if you’re going to read anything I post this week, it should be that.

The iPad piece, which was posted in response to Cory Doctorow’s post on why he isn’t getting an iPad. I replied to a friend about that in Buzz. Here’s what I said:

that’s a good article [referring to al3x.net's article on ipad openness]. you’re right about clark’s post, he was very much on a high horse. apple isn’t in the business of making things so other people can build into them, i certainly have no delusions about that. they want the control, that’s why they won’t accommodate flash. but from a content perspective, they’re in the same boat as everyone else trying to save the publishing industry; they’ll kowtow to them only so long as they need to, and then they’ll open it up when they feel they can, just like they did with DRM in itunes. the idea that you can’t develop ipad apps on an ipad is a weak point, because when’s the last time you developed an xbox game on the xbox?

from an interaction design perspective, you want to be able to hide any unnecessary complexity from the user. that’s the ipad is doing. why would anyone who isn’t a developer want to be able to develop on the ipad? to me, that’s the classic problem of making things easier for the developers and engineers rather than the end-user, and exactly why the ipad will be successful.

And that’s about as boring as I get. Have a good weekend, everyone!

Movies January 2010

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I’m still keeping this list and you can see up-to-date counts on Daytum, along with other, less healthy, ahem, habits. I’m going to post a couple of these over the next couple of days to catch up, then hopefully get the list up at the end of each month as we go. Here’s January’s:

  • 01 The Blind Side | 01.01.10
  • 02 (500) Days of Summer | 01.02.10
  • 03 GI Joe: Rise of Cobra | 01.03.10
  • 04 The Hurt Locker | 01.03.10
  • 05 The Hangover | 01.03.10
  • 06 Sherlock Holmes | 01.09.10
  • 07 Serenity | 01.10.10
  • 08 Point Break | 01.17.10
  • 09 Precious | 01.15.10
  • 10 Speed | 01.21.10
  • 11 Paper Heart | 01.23.10

I read The Blind Side and thought it was another great read about the economics of sports and how to exploit the market. The movie, I felt, was just another film about a white woman saving a minority. I am cynical. We did, however, see it at the Clyde Theater on Whidbey Island, which is a great little place with super-cheap popcorn and I got to have Whoppers which Owl doesn’t like.

We followed this up with a double-dose of That Kid From 3rd Rock From The Sun. He was funny in (500) Days of Summer, but totally riveting as the surprise (SPOILER) Cobra Commander in GI Joe. I’m sure that won’t spoil GI Joe for anyone.

Another double-dose: Kathryn Bigelow. Point Break kind of sucks, mostly because of Keanu, but there are some great freaking lines in that movie. The Hurt Locker was such a nice evolution of her style. I haven’t seen many of her other movies, though, so maybe I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. Seeing Keanu in Speed was funny. It’s funny to watch old movies like that again.

Paper Heart was simple, funny, sweet. We saw a lot of movies in January. Good start to the year.

A lot about the iPad this week, that’s because it came out today. I was at the U-Village last night and saw just two dudes waiting outside the night before. I didn’t go by today to see if there was still a line, but I kind of doubted there would be. Such a Msft town.

That said, I have one ordered and am eagerly anticipating its arrival at the end of the month.

Week has been good, finished some final deliverables, which of course, aren’t really final because there’s so many changes still in the works. Starting to work on some other stuff for another site, and oh yeah, I built Paula’s website, too! That was a while ago, and I failed to mention.

We’re heading over to NYC soon! I’m excited, aren’t you? Have a happy Easter, friends!
