Barcade and a Tangential Aside on Project Runway

Friday, September 29th, 2006

That place is great. Last weekend when J&R were in town we went to the Cubana Cafe for some more good eats. The pork there is so damn tasty, I can’t even stand it, and the elote is a great appetizer. On Saturday we went over to Barcade in Williamsburg and I finally had some good beer and played a lot of old-school video games. I kept shoving quarter into Smash TV, even though I couldn’t hear the best part, the sound. If you come visit, we must go there, but we have to go early to avoid an infestation of hipsters because it is in Williamsburg.

Saw J&B on Sunday, which was fun. We went over to Bite and Washington Square Park where there was a freakshow going on. In writing this, I’m finding I have very little to say about all this, other than that it was fun.

Incidentally, my Barcade visit was my first time in Williamsburg, and other than the fact that everyone was either my age or younger (slightly older?), there were no people that had babies or old Italian women walking on the street, it didn’t seem so bad. I did, however, spend a limited amount of time on the street, if only to go to the bo-de-ga to get some beer, of which I didn’t even buy any, and less prime-time in the bar.

I also handed in my first paper this week, which was a Grant Proposal for a Historical Chinese Film Collection. I’ve never written a grant proposal before, and if you ever find yourself in that situation and needing ASAP to learn how, go visit The Foundation Center, which is based here in NY, but is a wealth of resources meant to support non-profits and help philanthropic people be, well, philanthropic. I actually applied for a job there, but probably priced myself out of it. I hate it when they ask how much salary you’re looking for.

Oh, yeah, we finally got internet and cable at home, which is a godsend. I don’t mean to be so dramatic about it, but if you knew how many times a day I’m used to checking my e-mail, blogs, news, music, and basically answering any question that pops in my head, then you’d understand.

Not to mention that the new fall lineup is starting and Project Runway is almost over. One more episode! (We missed this week’s, because the Tivo messed up, but we think Tivo will catch a repeat today, and perhaps Alison (not Owl) will magically appear and become one of the final three (despite the fact that she most certainly didn’t appear at Fashion Week, unless Gothamist was lying). But seriously, how many people actually thought Angela and Vincent were more talented designers than her?

PS Harvey, you should have come up, because all we did was play video games. Next time. We can finish Smash TV together.

Bottle Rockets

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

BMP says to watch this video and start playing my song at the 40 second mark:

just now, about 40 seconds int[o] your song, bottle rockets, i happened to stumble upon this video:
[url_video below]. watch them together. it’s like watching pink floyd’s dark side of the moon with the wizard of oz. (and that’s the proper timing too, start the song about 40 seconds in).

I told him I never did that nerdy pf/wizard thing, but he insists it’s a good analogy.

UPDATE from bmp:

maybe it should be sixty seconds in, rather than 40 seconds.
you kind of want the end of the song to coincide exactly with the end of the video.

New Phone

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

I just realized that multiple times yesterday I pulled my new phone out of my right pocket to look at the time, and then pulled my old phone out of my left pocket to see if I missed any calls. What kind of geek walks around with two cell phones?

In any case, I did so because no one has/had my new number and my old one was still connected. I thought that my old number would get transferred to my new phone, but it hasn’t happened yet, but my old number is disconnected. What I’m really trying to say is that if anyone wants to get a hold of me (say, to wish me a happy birthday), you’re gonna have to email me. Ridiculous, I know. Here’s to hoping that our old numbers will eventually get to our new phones.

J&R get into town tonight and fun will ensue. Also, I took my bike for a trip around Red Hook yesterday and took a a lot of pictures.

No TV, No Beer Make Tim

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Something-Something. But no internet is also up there in making me go crazy. I really like that part in the Simpsons Halloween Episode and then Homer does that thing: “Vtttt-vttt.” That’s the best. Remember when we used to do that all the time, AA?

I’m at Naidre’s in CG and their mac ‘n’ cheese is great (mac’n cheese? mac and cheese?). Just interviewed for a tech position at a Montessori School as well, and I put together a new bookcase this morning. If I could only ever have part-time jobs, I would get so much done all the time.

So I was trying to find the new episodes of Project Runway and the pilot to Studio 60 on iTunes, thinking that they’d be there to tide us over until we get internet and TV on Tuesday, but neither are there yet! Logan mentioned there’s some interesting q&a going on over at the NBC site with Sorkin. Did I ever mention that he (J-Dawg) is doing some great blogging over at Metroblogging Portland these days, which excuses the long absences from Disposable.

Owl and I saw a guy with an I heart JC shirt (in the same style as I heart NY) on the other day, and I kept thinking, “Why does that guy love Japanese Congress so much?”

Studio 60

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Did anyone see it? Thoughts? Well, no spoilers, anyway. We moved into our new place on Saturday and we don’t have cable or internet yet (except for the stolen wireless we use every night) and we also don’t have an antenna. I expect nothing less than to love it, so if you saw it and loved it, just reinforce that, please.

New York

Your Heart Breaks is The Best. Sometimes I miss drinking good beer at the Tin Hat.

Big Nick’s Burger and Pizza Joint

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

I had the gorgonzola burger, which may or may not have been the bleu cheese burger. The difference is the style of the cheese in the burger — What I got came with a bleu cheese-ish type sauce and the chunks were meager and the sauce runny, which meant less flavor. I haven’t had a bleu cheese burger, ever, as good as Father’s Office in Santa Monica, CA, but this burger was more disappointing, especially since this is on a few “Best Burger” lists for NYC. I’m willing to give them another chance, but this one wasn’t so good.

The quality of the meat was a little scary, mostly because I regularly order my burgers cooked medium-rare. It wasn’t fatty, but it was plain and uninviting. It turned the bun soggy, and the tomato and lettuce into mush. The fries were no better, but steak fries are a preference to some, but not for me. I’d rather have had the lone waffle fry they put on top.

To top it off, it wasn’t cheap, even by NYC standards. Thankfully, the menu is huge, so if the burgers tend not to be so great, there must be something on there that they do well.

Keith Olbermann at Ground Zero

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

I was pretty mad about the coverage of Bush at Ground Zero yesterday. I thought about how it was just a photo op, and I listened to only a miniscule portion of speech, because I couldn’t feel anything but anger. Keith Olbermann did a great job voicing what I felt. I can only be thankful that we don’t have to see Bush go to New Orleans in 2010 and “commemorate” the people that lost their lives there by justifying the Iraq War.

Fantasy World Series 2006

Minnesota Twins vs. Philadelphia Phillies:

I like the match-up and the underdog-ness of both teams, and with the way that Ryan Howard is hitting, it’s a possiblity. Remember when everyone said he couldn’t hit lefties (I’m looking at you, jth05)? He’s not only hitting them — He’s pounding them.

The Science of Sleep

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Owl and I caught a free preview showing of Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep tonight; it’s late and I start work tomorrow, but I wanted to get down a few thoughts about this out before I went to bed.

Popover Cafe

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

It’s amazing what kind of misleading and dubious information you can get from citysearch.com, which is something I’ve known before, but for some reason I always end up going back. Our experience at Popover Cafe should be a good reminder not to use citysearch.
