while not a huge fan of the boondocks (my bruddah is) it does have its moments, and an animated series would be interesting to see. with mcgruder writing and executive producing, i don’t expect it to turn out too terribly different from the original comic strip. unlike dilbert, which sucked from the start, this may actually have something to work with. and i’ll take animated comedy over fox’s usual reality tv any day.

i don’t much care for any of the elmore leonard movies that have been adapted from his novels, nor have a read any of his books, but his writing tips may be somewhat helpful to people looking to improve their writing.

it looks like robert rodriguez is gonna direct some sin city, he’ll do it all himself, edit it in three days and for like a hundred bucks. and after he’s done, he’ll be all, “this was easy, you should do it, too.”

braid only came to seattle once since i had heard of them. they played the dv8, i think. and i, as per usual, wussed out and did not go. they broke up shortly thereafter, and i saw hey mercedes a few times, but always regretted never having seen braid, especially after watching the killing a camera movie. well, i checked the whois, and this doesn’t seem to be a joke: braidtour2004.com don’t poo-poo this, but i’m excited.

downhillbattle.org has an interview series with various musicians and label owners, including an interview with ian mackaye, sage francis, mirah, robb knassel (runs saddle creek), and tons more. there’s also a lot of mp3’s (and mp2’s) of the interviews and the bands related. worth a listen, i been hearing mackaye’s voice all day. 1-2-3… REPEATER!

“When people who are songwriters say ‘That’s my property and if you give it away for free then I’ll lose my incentive,’ then, well, good riddance.”

there’s a nytimes article on the grey album, most of which is all stuff everyone knows already, except for:

Many artists, however, like the Beatles, will not allow their music to be sampled. But even if permission is granted, it is common for a copyright holder to request more than 50 percent of publishing rights for a new song created from the copyrighted work. So if Mr. Burton had been able to get permission to make “The Grey Album” from both the Beatles and Jay-Z, he would probably have had to give away more than 100 percent of his publishing rights.

it’s so unnerving that people consistently want to take archaic laws and apply them to current situations and think they are adequate simply because of precedent (gay marriage, anyone?).

the resurgence of subpop’s stranglehold on consistently good and new music continues, and the grip is tightening with the latest release from the elected (feat. blake sennet of rilo kiley). did i just totally miss out on this, or is it going unnoticed?

just by the two songs i’ve heard, i’m hearing some bright eyes, but that’s a tired comparison especially with the jolt the 2:36 mark of go on gave me. pristine pop song with some pretty seamlessly integrated glitch. the track has nice vox. check out go on and greetings in braille.

best glossary song ever: transmitting a.m. if anything ever felt so loaded with baggage of the time, this is it. lots of other great glossary songs at the discography page on their website.

since the sharing machine no longer does song sharing anymore, i figured i’d post this tapeop thread about song battles. basically the drum guy posts a beat for people to mess with every week (or so). there’s some talented people in there (and some not so much), but it’s fun all the same.

a scathing and appropriate fisking of the idiocy of the long beach press-telegram on the dodgers’ hiring of paul depodesta as their new GM. if the media and dodger fans can’t appreciate a hiring like that, we should pull a bavasi for depodesta trade, like right. freaking. now.

just a reminder that it’s grey tuesday, and you can download the entire grey album from a number of places today, and if you haven’t yet gotten it, now’s the time to download a song or two to see if you’re into it. i’m pretty into it.

seattle based design 33rpm, lots of three-color prints, show posters, and turquoise. they’ve donated some stuff to the department of safety, which is having an online benefit auction that is worth looking at.

in a related blog-spamming note, it looks like google is kicking page ranks to zero if you comment-spam. a little explanation in the link, but it quickly devolves into the usual forum idiocy.
