bite my shiny metal ass

i’m the shit. back to your normally scheduled programming. i figured out the mutherfucker, no need for cron jobs anymore. expect content tomorrow.
the problems continue:
as it stands, movabletype is in the process of being banned on myacen server. it may be a combination of the cgi scripts having security holes in them and the php scripts that i have running on this site as well, but whenever a movabletype script runs now (including the scripts that produce comments and write the db), it fucks up the permissions on the index.php file as well as the comments.php file, creating that 500 error i know you’ve been getting.
so, for now, i’ve disabled comments, and the posting is going to get a tad sparse until i can figure something out or the helpdesk guys gimmie something. sorry for the intermittentness.
all right, i admit it. i’m a spoiled fucking brat who refuses to identify with the upper-middle class background i’m from. hell, i may even be upper-class, what constitutes that, anyway? my parents make money, though how much, i’m not sure, but they’ve never really had trouble providing me with what i needed, and more often than not gave me what i wanted. liberal guilt, the next best thing to doing something. do i hear an echo?
my point is, my parents bought me a mutherfucking ti 15″. no point in hiding it, you’re gonna find out anyway, and this prevents me from lying about it saying something like i saved up money for the sucker. i didn’t. i’m just a lucky kid with nice parents, i do shit (as in nuffin’), and you’re damn right i feel guilty about it. but i’m grateful.
anyways, i’m finally back for the week, after a few strange problems with the host, and some weird noise about them banning movabletype from their servers. time to get my ass in gear and set that linux box back up and give it another go. i keep forgetting that it’s almost time to renew this domain, but i’ll get around to it.

ali and my sister will be happy to hear that there is a confirmed date on the lucksmiths tour up in santa barbara if they’re not going to be able to get a show in los angeles:
Saturday Aug 9 The Lucksmiths
The Mercury Lounge (5871 Hollister Avenue, Goleta)
did anyone catch them up in the nw or elsewhere? it’s been so long, but that new album’s good, huh? i’ve been meaning to write something about it for a while, but i haven’t gotten around to writing any half-assed movie or record reviews in a while, as you can see by the stagnate reviews on the sidebars. i mean, i was still talking about ted leo and he’s already back and playing tonight, for chrissake.
—
too bad they didn’t do the same thing to lars and those other fucks. shove that crap metal up their dumb asses.
—
this reminds me of that new jack in the box commercial, where jack keeps saying “northwest” instead of “southwest.” anyways, is there a possibility i’m interpreting this wrong?
—
it was sprinkling this morning when i left the house and it was oh so beautifully overcast that i got the feeling i could actually breathe and smell wet pavement instead of exhaust. that didn’t last long, but it was fun while it did.
having some technical difficulties with the server (again). be back soon. for now, scour the links on the side. good stuff to be found.
cell phones worse thant drunkenness. i’d like to see a ban, please. (yeah right! (esp. in l.a.))
this makes me really happy: quality revenge at last”, from the hey mercedes loses control countdown.

developed film last night, for the first time in a few years, and they didn’t come out half bad. will print some pictures sometime.

man, what happened to the US being all elite and shit? i mean, 10 fucking tow rockets into the mansion, because they couldn’t get some grunts in there to take prisoners? whack. i mean, intelligence, intelligence, intelligence.
i gotta say, i hate the twins announcers. there’s a difference between favoring a team as an announcer and favoring a team as a fan, and fans do not make good announcers. the fact that i have to watch the mariners slide while simultaneously hearing these assholes poo-poo them without statistics to back it up is annoying. ah, i’m just pissed they’re losing. but i do have the same problem with the white sox announcers.
i think the comic con took out all the post in me yesterday, since today i’ve got little news. i’ve been absolutely obsessed with futurama since james came down and we watched it all weekend. gotta love fatbot.
meanwhile, it’s the bottom of the 3rd, and garcia is melting down quickly. feh, who am i kidding, i got nothing for you today.
i was checking stats to see who i was going to play against detroit today, and i found out that this 20 year old kid from kennewick (born in kennewick, at least) plays for the tigers. interesting, though i still hope varitek and mueller light him up.

a lot of hub-bub over this political cartoon, which reminds me of the state skit about it. “even in jest…”
—
checked out some artist sites earlier in the day, ran across ooder, which from the looks of it is based in seattle. look for stickers and other artwork around town up there. another interesting project, though i do like the artwork at ooder better, is subway life, which is a guy drawing people in subway trains.

and now for the real news: logan and i hauled ass down to san diego on saturday to attend the san diego comic con. i basically attended a bunch of cartoon panels all day, a lot of futurama, some adult swim stuff. turns out that matt groening still wants to do more futurama episodes, and will find a way to do them– hopefully cartoon network will pick ‘em up and payroll the deal, but the show is expensive to make. there was also a mention of doing a few futurama movies, which would be the shit.
the panel blew me away, it actually ruined me for all the other panels that day, including the adult swim panel, which was good and full of previews but the bunch were simply not as charismatic as the the futurama crew. they have a different humor, but i got a free dvd and t-shirt that probably won’t fit. here’s dates for the new seasons of williams street productions:
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: August 31
The Brak Show: October 5 (Viewers Choice special on Sept. 7th)
Sealab 2021: October 25
SGC2C: November 23
Birdman: in 2004
Home Movies: November 2nd
apprently the intro to the new duck dodgers show is by the flaming lips, sung by tom jones. there’s a lot more information over here.
i also attended a panel for the animation writer’s guild which talked about getting into writing for animated tv series, which reinforced the mantra of “getting your foot in the door any way you can.”
if nothing else, the con was inspiring and stimulating, definitely not the nerd-fest i thought it was going to be, but there were quite a few fan boys around. i’m glad it’s got the stigma that it is, though. i’m comfortable around nerds.
there was a preview of the clone wars, which was on friday that i did not catch, but if the reviews are any indication, it’s going to be good.
caught part of teen titans last night, but changed the channel since i didn’t catch it from the beginning and wasn’t too impressed by it, though i’d have to sit through a whole one for a final judgement. the same goes for the new mtv spider-man series, which right off the bat did not look like good CG, but again, i’d have to see the whole thing.

i was reaching for some music content on what’s become an all cartoon blog, and all i could find were the 3 mp3’s of the jealous sound they have up at better looking records. the gift horse is hot– nice clean sounding guitars and a tight snap on the snare. the bass has got a good click on it, too, and the harmonies and hook are good as any the tracks off of the ep. it’s been so long since then! i have to get out and get this. i’ll let you know when i do.
it’s not often when i’m at work and i discover something i actually like working on. in fact, i can only remember two other times when this has happened, the first was punch drunk love, the second was the tick live action series. this is the third coming, and it’s called the office.
normally, i’d tell the bbc to shove their boring british comedies up their arse, but this show is a riot. you can check a ton of sound clips on the fansite, one of my favorites being gareth and tim. cock!

coming this fall is one of the only cross-media ventures lucas has ever had the good sense to allow, genndy tartakovsky doing the clone wars, if you just want artwork, check it out right here.

if that weren’t enough reason for hoping this summer would fucking end already, release dates have just been posted, along with
the covers for space ghost and aqua teen hunger force. both are two discs, space ghost clocking in at 203 whopping minutes of comic genius, aqua teen 187 minutes. both set for release november 18 of this year.

we missed gigantic here in l.a., but it’s still opening elsewhere soon, and has gotten some good reviews, and is full of Peope More Important Than You, like sarah vowell, dave eggers, frank black, conan o’brien, ira glass, andy richter, jon stewart, harry shearer, etc. spreading the good word of they might be giants. i’m not the hugest fan myself, but i’d love to see that. maybe when i’m up north, eh? here’s the dates:
Austin, TX: Dobie, opening 8/1
San Francsico, CA: Castro, opening 8/8
Seattle, WA: Varsity Theatre, opening 8/15
Honolulu, HI: Restaurant Row 9, opening 8/15
Nashville, TN: Regal Green Hills 16, opening 9/5
Hartford, CT: Real Artways, Sept. 12-13 & September 19-20
Edmonton, Alberta: Metro Cinema Society, opening 9/19

a few dates for the weakerthans, if they’re coming to your town, do yourself a favor and go see them. official site is on epitaph, though they’re still on anti-, officially, right? i mean, i know they’re a division, but…
09/12/2003 Seattle, WA
09/15/2003 San Francisco, CA
09/16/2003 San Francisco, CA
09/18/2003 Los Angeles, CA
09/24/2003 Dallas, TX

i’m not terribly excited about this going down in hollywood, but some people might be in to the bands at don’t knock the rock, but me, not so much (sonic youth shmonic shmoof). word is david cross will be there sometime though, and there’s some good rock films set to play at the big-ass arclight.
fuckin’ crap, at least once every 3 months i lose a post because i hit wrong buttons before i can copy it or save it. it happened today. long story short:
loyola snitches out two of their students
rickey henderson signed to the dodgers
you don’t get sunsets like this in los angeles. bonus points if you can tell me where in the u.d. this is.
whoa, what the fuck!? looks like fox is trying to make up for bad box office numbers, it’s getting creamed by pirates of the caribbean ($78.1M vs. $25.6M) and they use league of extraordinary gentlemen for the intro of the all-star game. that is some BULLshit! whatever, i guess some writers worked hard to make that intro exciting and all. maybe next year, guys! at least then, maybe fox will have something decent to synergize.
in any case, regardless of the fact that i have 8 all-stars on my fantasy baseball team, i’m still in 7th, but i’m shaking things up to get some diversity going for the second half.

so so grateful that slatch linked that new weakerthans track (plea from a cat named virtue), as far as i’m concerned, that is the most anticipated album of the year. bonus points for writing a song from the eyes of a cat.
and yeah, even more anticipated than the new death cab album, which, according to traveler’s diagram is already out on soulseek, and i expect your local newsgroup, too.

i spent all last night drafting a letter to my congresswoman about the de-funding of teach for america and encourage you to do the same if you’re into that. i don’t want to harp on about it, i’ve already done that, as many of you that i’ve already emailed know.
yep, it’s hipster bingo. from cbs.
all right, finally cooked up a list for ymdb, my top 17 movies, not necessarily in that order. but mostly.
i put in the sunshine fix yesterday, and after i wedged the cd out of its case, i found a picture of an uber-hippie psychedelic bill doss staring at me behind some glasses that, though probably were not shaped like flowers, might as well have been.
i think i paid too much money for a freakin’ promo disc, and to be sure, i listened to the first song and couldn’t even make it through i wanted to puke so fucking bad. man, all that pop magic and beach boy harmonies and interesting instrumentation really wasn’t just the brain-child of bill doss.
really though, the sunshine fix just legitimizes the olivia tremor control. maybe in a few years i’ll take a chance and put that cd back in the player. maybe. but for now, it’ll sit on the shelf collecting dust with all the other crappy-ass promos i’ve paid too much for.

the 800 page final report about sept 11 is coming out in two weeks, and if it tends to support allegations that the saudis support terrorism, it may give bush a boost on the whole missing WMD deal, but it’ll be interesting to see how much information will be released on the admin’s knowledge before the attacks, and if it will be enough to sink the ship or if it’ll all balance out the presidency in the public’s eye. i’ve given up on trying to predict public reaction. via broken lull.
—
i don’t like to believe that exactly what the riaa is fighting against is helping them, but the scotsman reports that illegal music downloads are boosting album sales, but will undoubtedly kill the singles market. if you can tell me the last time you bought a single (vinyl does not count), then i’ll send you a letter of a sympathetic nature mourning the death of CD singles.
—
i’ve forgotten what a joy cockeyed is. my favorite so far is the ketchup packet bear, mostly because i’m a big fan of bears and ketchup, which is also why i like the semi-related, how much is inside? ketchup edition.
—
i’m not particularly fond of the font they used on the cover art of the new dcfc album, nor really of the picture of the crow wrapped in yarn, but possibly because i have such an affinity for the something about airplanes packaging.
