i haven’t gotten the chance to check out all the promos from cartoon network, though i’ve seen most of them on the tele– still wondering if that justice league promo i keep seeing is the streets or just a rip-off. also, do you remember that one with the powerpuff girls running into the glass door? “That’s Buttercup, man!”

interestingly enough apples in stereo show up yet again, they really are commercial whores; they sell their shit to anyone who will drop ‘em a dime. shonen knife, devo, schooly d, prince paul are among others that do promos for CN, and if we’re going to get all crossover about it, that aqua teen hunger force commercial for 1-800-collect where shake pretends to be carrot top is rad. funny though, mike piazza seems to busy doing commercials to hit any baseballs, mutherfucker is hitting like .161. i’m in 12th (of 12) in my fantasy league, by the way, which goes to show i still don’t know shit about baseball.

and and and my sister just informed me that apples in stereo is going to be in town tomorrow night at the knitting factory. she set off my alarm when she told me olivia tremor control was going to open, though i was a bit puzzled since they broke up (right?), but they’re not opening, instead it’s like math & science and everybody else. haven’t heard anything from either, though judging from the mp3’s up at everybody else’s site, it sounds a hell of a lot like the push kings. strike that, actually, this: Carrick Moore Gerety, formerly of Boston’s indie darlings the Push Kings… is doing the vox, and i think it pretty much made up my mind that i should probably check this show out. check out a couple tracks at the site.

a black star p.s.a.

Monday, April 14th, 2003

those of you who caught chapelle show last week (what looks to be the last episode for the season) also caught black star rip. kweli and mos def blew it up with this track, i found the whole song over at h1phop.com– here’s mos def’s part:

Beef is not what Jay said to Nas
Beef is when working folks can’t get jobs
Instead trying to find niggas to rob,
Trying to find bigger guns so they can finish the job.
Beef is when the crack heads can’t find moms
Cuz they in a pine box or locked behind bars.
Beef ain’t the summer jam for Hot 9-7
Beef is the cocaine and aids epidemic.
Beef don’t come with a radio edit.
Beef is when the judge is calling you defendant
Beef, it come with a long jail sentence.
Handed down to you in a few short minutes.
Beef is when your girl come through for a visit,
talkin’ about her pregnant by some other nigga.
Beef is high blood-pressure and bad credit
Need a loan for your home but too broke to get it.
And all your little kids is doin is getting bigger
Trying not raise them around these wild niggas.
Beef is when a gold digga got ya seat,
and a manicured hand out like, “Pay me nigga”
Or I’m telling your wife some foul rumor that’ll ruin your life
Beef is when the gangsta ain’t doing it right
and anotha gangsta done decided what to do with his life.
Beef is not what these famous niggas do on a mic.
Beef is what George Bush would do in a fight.
Beef is not what Ja said to Fifty
But Beef is the world to herb, not being here with me.
When a soldier ends his life with his own gun,
Beef is trying to figure out what to tell to his son.
Beef is oil prices and geopolitics.
Beef is Iraq, The West Bank, and Gaza Strip.
Some beef is big and some beef is small,
But what you call beef is not beef at all.
Beef is real like, happening every day.
And it’s realer than them songs that gave to K-Slay.
This has been a Black Star P.S.A
From Mos Def, Pretty Flaco, Black Dante and the Blackstar Embassy, B-to-the-K.

for those that didn’t catch it, check out the full track:
through soundclick over here.

a few things here: news of a new cosby animated project though i figure it won’t have anything on fat albert, though hopefully will be better than cosby and cosby mysteries. david alan grier is named to star in it, and for the life of me, i can’t remember the last time he made me laugh, i mean, even on in living color, he was probably the most unfunny guy on that show, and all those bit gigs he gets hosting stand-up comedy on comedy central. boo!

as long as i’m booing, i’mma shout-out boos to the following:

the white stripes (yes, even when the first album came out, shit bored me, i lumped them in with the fuckin’ crappy ass hives). as i was explaining, i don’t think it has much to do with my general distaste for classic rock (ie, pink floyd, led zepplin) or to the throwback-rock stylings that have become popular as of late, because, hey, i like those other bands that do that stuff. i’m glad they get to be on conan 4 nights the last week of april though, which is better than having the brian setzer orchestra on all week.

the last built to spill album (ancient melodies from my ass-crack). i had once long ago theorized that built to spill and superchunk were members of an elite group of still existing bands that were still releasing good records, each one better than the last. i think bts peaked at perfect from now on, though keep it like a secret was more a plateau than a descent. i enjoyed here’s to shutting up, but amftf? boo!

monday night television sucks, too, and i’m not too fond of those blood brothers, either.

so i’ve been thinking/you should be thinking about going to the following: 4/9-10 (that’s tonight and tomorrow, folks) bright eyes . arab strap . henry fonda theater 4/20 of montreal . james william hindel . spaceland 4/21 versus . jason lowenstein . +/- . troubadour 4/27 silverchair (ha! are you paying attention?) . hft 4/29 cat power . radar bros . hft (correction!) 5/17 ted leo and Rx’s . el guapo . troub 5/24 built to spill . LA hob 6/10 dismemberment plan . anaheim hob

i found the glossary site a couple of days ago, and there’s tracks from the new record as well as a few from the old ones. i didn’t realize they’d released another record until a few days ago when i saw it on the playlist over at basement-life.com. i ordered the new record as soon as i heard it was out, so it should be in the mail soon. the new songs on the site sound a good deal better as far as production goes, but joey’s voice sounds drastically different from 2000– i didn’t even know they’d released an ep last year. on days go by, his voice sounds incredibly like the godrays’ alex. not a bad thing, not at all. just might take a bit of getting used to.

in related news, i talked to josh, and apparently kissing book has broken up, with adam in new york and drew not interested in continuing. andrew’s going to leave the name with the band, as they’ve done exactly what he wanted to do with it, but he’s still going to make music, and is working with dustin rocketship on recording more and starting another label. good news.

look for an mp3 from situation: no win later this week, if i can get it from vinyl to digital. that’s andrew from kissing book and joey from glossary in a punk (that’s right) band, from long, long ago. it’s very good. you’ll like it. i promise.

i went running yesterday, and it quickly hit me like a ton of bricks why i don’t go running. my chest heaved, my lungs burned, my feet and back ached, and i hadn’t even gone a block. okay, i’d gone a few blocks, but i’m using artistic license to show how it felt like i’d only gone a block, and in any case, it doesn’t change the fact that it was weak. so weak.

it took me about an hour to find this website again because the first time i found it i thought i’d be able to find the link easily enough and so didn’t bookmark it. turns out i was really, really wrong. in any case, this site is dan shafer’s design outfit, dandy design. he did a bunch of poster for shows up in bellingham for a long time, including the one shown here, for the all-time quarterback, martin youth auxiliary, jen wood, last good breath show. brandon and i were last good breath, and we covered a couple of lucksmiths songs. it was a fun show, and i remember how badly we thought we did when it was over. luckily, everyone was nice and didn’t say anything.

anyhow, check out the site, there’s plenty more posters that are pretty cool including a very nice 5 gears, rev hydra, rat cat hogan show and a sandcastle still / apollo generation one. silkscreened posters are the best.

apparently the matrix is the most philosophical movie ever made. they even taught a class on it at UW a few years ago. someone invoked the name during my ethics class a few years back, i was annoyed. the girl mentioning dressed and groomed herself as if she were trinity. she certainly was no trinity.

just another day in los angeles: a camel got deputized.

if i were to get a new phone right now, and say, this phone were released and in my price range, i would probably get the sony t610. bluetooth’s going to rule the world soon, so you better get something that’s compatible. what’s the deal with the earpiece on this thing? ahh, the future, where no straight lines exist.

sooner or later…
